Bicentennial Birthday Weekend

The National Park Service invites you to a grand commemorative weekend to honor 200 years of the life and legacy of Frederick Douglass “The Lion of Anacostia” at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site on Saturday, February 17, and Sunday February 18, 2018.

The weekend festivities will allow you to step inside the world of Frederick Douglass and experience how he lived his life as a global activist and revolutionary leader. Guest speakers include Kenneth Morris, Douglass’s third great-grandson; David Blight, award-winning author and historian; and Leigh Fought renowned historian and scholar.

At  The Anacostia Arts Center:

1:00-5:00 pm Get Your Photo Like Douglass!

In the 19th century getting your photograph taken was a formal affair. Photography was new technology. Get the feel of a historic photo studio and have your photo taken as Douglass would have.

12:30-1:00 pm “The Power of the Spoken Word”

Student orators recite dramatic excerpts from Douglass’s speeches.

1:00-1:45 pm “The Douglass Story for Kids”

Puppet shows were a common form of children’s entertainment in Douglass’s time. Enjoy a puppet show about Douglass’s life by Double Nickels Theatre professional puppeteers!

3:00-3:45 pm “The Douglass Story for Kids”

4:00-5:00 pm “The Power of the Spoken Word”
