METRO MAMBO: “Cha Cha Cha Boom!” (The Other “Rock Around the Clock”)

July 22 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

FREE
Considered “missing” for nearly 20 years, “Cha Cha Cha Boom!” was indeed “made by the producers of ‘Rock Around the Clock’,” as advertised in 1956. The films share sets, the basic plot-line… even the leading lady!! Join host Jim Byers (WPFW 89.3 FM’s Latin Flavor Classic Edition) for a discussion and screening. Free, but tickets are suggested via Eventbrite due to limited seating.
Featuring mambo superstar Perez Prado in his sole speaking role in a U.S. film, the movie also showcases: Baltimore-born dancer Sylvia Lewis; Strato-Caster namesake Mary Kaye Trio; Mexican bandleader Luis Arcaraz; and pioneering west coast charanga leader Manny Lopez. Prior to the screening, Byers will briefly share excerpts from his 2008 interview with Mr. Lopez, as well as the back-story of the long-missing film.
A Washington City Paper “Best of DC” selection in 2016, the 8th season of the Metro Mambo Latin-jazz lecuture/concert series is made possible by a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
