Anacostia Arts Center Unveils Renderings for Reimagined Space
A bold new vision rooted in community engagement, arts equity, and inclusive development
Washington, D.C. — [July 21, 2025] — Today, the Anacostia Arts Center (AAC) powered by WACIF is proud to release the first renderings of its forthcoming renovation project, a milestone moment in the evolution of one of Ward 8’s community landmarks.
The redesigned space will improve AAC’s programming capacity and reposition the center as a dynamic, community-informed hub for arts, retail, and entrepreneurship East of the River. The transformation is the result of years of engagement with artists, residents, and local entrepreneurs who have shaped the center’s future direction.
“Our community told us what they needed, more space to gather, create, and thrive. These designs are our response,” said Messay Derebe, General Director of the Anacostia Arts Center. “This redevelopment is about honoring what’s always made this space special while building for the future.”
In response to community feedback and changing organizational needs, the redesign reflects a significant shift from earlier plans: the building will no longer add two floors, maintaining the scale and character of the neighborhood while reimagining the ground level for maximum visibility and impact.
Key features of the new AAC include:
- Window-line retail frontage that boosts visibility and access for local retail
- Flexible event and exhibition spaces designed for artists and community programming
- Enhanced integration with The Hive, a modernized AAC’s coworking space for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and creatives
- A future-forward programming plan informed by what we’ve heard from our neighbors and partners
“Art and culture are not accessories to development. They are foundational,” said Shannan Herbert, CEO of WACIF, AAC’s managing organization. “We are creating a space that reflects and serves the community that has sustained it.”
Construction is slated to begin in November 2025 pending receipt of permits.
